On Friday, Tuscan 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders enjoyed a performance by "Off the Beat", a student-led modern rock a cappella group from the University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia. Since its inception, Off the Beat has won over 25 CARA awards, the highest honor in a cappella music. Their songs have been featured numerous times on compilations such as Voices Only and the BOCA: Best of College A Cappella series. In addition to the concerts produced every semester, the group has performed all over Philadelphia, the Northeast, and the country to much acclaim. After the concert, students were able to ask the group questions about the music, how it was composed, and what brought them all together.
After their performance, Off the Beat led a workshop for one of our Afterschool Enrichment classes, "Pitch Perfect". They taught the students how to warm up their voices using solfege (a singing technique used to teach pitch), the art of beat-boxing, and how to sing popular songs in parts. It was an amazing experience for everyone involved.
